Crowd Mapping for Communities Initiative

The Crowd Mapping for Communities Initiative is HeakeSpeak’s community-powered response to the growing need for real-time, inclusive, and locally informed data that drives equitable decision-making during times of crisis and recovery.

Rooted in our commitment to accessibility and community resilience, this initiative uses open-source technology and community knowledge to map needs, barriers, and resources—before, during, and after emergencies.

Community Reporting Tool (Ushahidi-Based Platform)

At the heart of the initiative is our Ushahidi-based Community Reporting Tool, a mobile-friendly platform that empowers residents, first responders, advocates, and local leaders to report incidents, identify needs, and share resources in real time. Submissions can be made via web, text message, or email—ensuring broad accessibility and multilingual engagement.

Access Gap Mapping

We crowdsource and visualize accessibility barriers in neighborhoods—such as broken curb cuts, blocked routes, shelter access limitations, and digital service exclusions. This data informs community planning, emergency operations, and equity audits, ensuring that no one is left behind in times of crisis.

Disaster Resource Visualization

The platform also maps critical resources—like accessible shelters, food distribution sites, charging stations, medical support, and mental health services—alongside user-submitted needs and service gaps. This gives agencies, responders, and community members a live, visual overview of what’s available and what’s missing.

Why It Matters

  • Increases transparency and community participation in disaster planning and recovery

  • Highlights inequities and unmet needs in real time

  • Supports data-driven advocacy and equity-focused resource allocation

  • Amplifies voices of those often excluded from traditional planning and response systems

Whether responding to a storm, preparing for public health emergencies, or advocating for everyday access, the Crowd Mapping for Communities Initiative helps turn lived experience into actionable insight—empowering communities to map what matters most.
