Inclusive Community Learning Initiative
HeakeSpeak's Inclusive Community Learning Initiative (ICLI) readies everyone from youth to elders with diverse abilities and experiences to learn, lead and thrive together․ Guided by accessible literacy, we build community-based opportunities that are practical, inclusive and action-oriented․
What the Initiative Includes
Lifelong Learning Models Micro courses, badges, and community practicums meet learners wherever they are with flexible, stackable, open access programs that are online, and hybrid․ These models are grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), presented in plain language with multimodal options, so that learners can enter, exit, and re-engage as circumstances dictate․
Civic Learning & Justice Literacy Participants use learning strategies to understand and navigate local government, emergency services, public services, their rights and responsibilities, and advocate for equity and access to these services․ Civic action modules use easily understood disaster preparedness tools to practice civic engagement and advocacy skills in actionable scenarios․
Peer-Led & Youth-Driven Programs We train residents, youth leaders, and veterans to be peer facilitators․ Youth co-design curriculum, lead projects, and gather community feedback to ensure our programs are guided by lived experience and local priorities, and engender next-generation leadership․
How We Deliver
Custom Learning Design (online & hybrid): customized courses, workshops and community labs․
Inclusive Curriculum Development: culturally responsive, and designed to be accessible within UDL/WCAG․
Multilingual & multimodal access: translated material, captions, transcripts, audio, and screen-reader-compatible materials․
Digital Literacy Toolkits: practical guides to engage in online civic and resilience-building activities confidently, competently, and safely․
Accessibility & Quality
All digital materials are reviewed by Accessible Web RAMP for WCAG compliance․ Workshop materials typically use visual, auditory and kinesthetic forms of access with individual accommodations available on request․
Outcomes We Aim For
Greater civic and justice literacy and engagement․
Greater community preparedness and inclusive response capacity․
Expanded the youth and peer leadership pipeline․
Concrete gains in literacy and confidence with technology․
