Accessible Literacy for All

Accessible Literacy for All is one of the primary tenets of HeakeSpeak, which states that literacy for all people, regardless of ability, language, or learning style, should be inclusive, functional, and accessible․

In an increasingly complex and digital world, literacy is more than just reading and writing․ It is about knowing how to engage and participate in community and civic life․ HeakeSpeak is committed to closing the digital divide and to ensuring that literacy is not a barrier but a bridge to participation and resilience․ Also see Accessible Literacy for All: Communication disorders and literacy

Digital Literacy Toolkits

Using our toolkits as templates, we create and share free and low-cost toolkits to help people with disabilities, nontraditional students, older adults, and at-risk youth have direct and meaningful access to digital tools and technologies․ Toolkits include accessible instructional guides, plain language content, visual supports, and assistive technology tool recommendations․

Multilingual & Multimodal Access

We believe all languages and learning styles should be used and understood․ We stress plain text, easy-read, audio, captioned video, and screen-reader-text access for all․ We also publish views or adaptations so people can access information in the language they prefer, and the format best for them․

Community-Based Learning

Our programs are designed in partnership with the communities we serve to harness local need and build mutual trust․ We know that literacy is most effective when it is relevant, local, and rooted in the lived experience of those it serves․

HeakeSpeak is part of Accessible Literacy for All․ Its purpose is to help learners of all ages and backgrounds more easily access information in their lives, build key skills, and develop confidence and resiliency, strengthening the resilience of whole communities․
